Project Farringdon involved the extensive redevelopment of three existing buildings to create the flagship London headquarters for Anglo American plc and the De Beers Group. Completed in September 2020, the prestigious development transformed 17 Charterhouse Street, Saffron Hill, and the Saffron Hill Extension into a modern corporate headquarters, incorporating high-quality office accommodation, staff dining facilities, and collaborative workspaces while carefully preserving the character of the surrounding Hatton Garden Conservation Area.
The project marked the return of the historic De Beers business to the heart of London's renowned jewellery district, combining contemporary building services with the sensitive refurbishment of a landmark city location. Delivering a development of this calibre required specialist insulation solutions that met demanding performance, energy efficiency, and aesthetic standards.
Thermal Projects was appointed to provide a comprehensive insulation package throughout the development. Our scope of works included the installation of phenolic insulation board and VentureClad® systems to roof areas, thermal insulation to mechanical services, acoustic insulation, removable thermal insulation jackets, metal cladding, and trace heating systems.
The thermal insulation package was designed to minimise heat loss, maximise the efficiency of mechanical services, and contribute to the building's overall energy performance. Phenolic insulation boards provided high thermal performance where space was limited, while VentureClad® offered a durable and weather-resistant finish for exposed external services. Trace heating systems were installed to protect critical pipework from freezing, ensuring reliable operation throughout the year.
Acoustic insulation was incorporated to reduce noise transmission from building services, creating a comfortable working environment for occupants, while bespoke removable insulation jackets were installed to valves, flanges, and specialist equipment, allowing easy access for future inspection and maintenance without compromising thermal efficiency. Metal cladding completed the installation, providing robust mechanical protection and a high-quality architectural finish to exposed insulated services.
Project Farringdon demonstrates Thermal Projects' expertise in delivering complete insulation solutions for prestigious commercial developments. By combining specialist materials, precision installation, and attention to detail, we helped create an energy-efficient, durable, and high-performing mechanical services installation that complements one of London's most significant corporate headquarters.
